The source lineage develops grounding from common ground and semantic anchoring toward contextual language interpretation and explicit grounding of generated language in supplied context.
Across these sources, grounding depends on a relation between a representation or communicative act and information outside that isolated representation that constrains its interpretation.
Context availability alone is insufficient: the contextual material must bear on the represented expression, claim, or output in order to participate in the grounding relation.
